December
2005
Hello
friends, artists, art lovers!
Its been quite
a while since the last newsletter. Rob has been extra busy with workshops
this year... along with a studio renovation and move he's had very little
time to do his own work. He did manage to sneak in some paintings this
summer. Several are on the left. The portrait of Bill isn't quite finished
but I persuaded him to let me give everyone a sneak peek.
ROB'S
BACKYARD STUDIO COMING ALONG
"We
might as well have started from scratch" is the consensus around
here when it comes to the renovation of Rob's backyard studio. But renovate
we did, and the 50+year old barn/garage we started with is now beginning
a new life as an artist's studio. We were told it previously housed horses,
a hot rod or two, and even an ultralite airplane (not to mention the beehive,
mice, and racoon we evicted!). Now that it is nearing completion, it is,
hopefully, to be the new birthplace of lots of great artwork! Rob loves
the idea of holding some small workshops in the space at some point. We'll
keep you posted. Fortunately, this was not near as big a task as the house
renovation (yes, we must be a bit crazy) but just as big a relief to finish!

THE
LONG WAIT FOR CLASSES
The wait has gotten
longer and longer for those signing up for Rob's Friday Art League classes.
A year ago the first students arrived at around 4am. This last signup
saw its first arrivals in line at around 7pm on the sidewalk in Alexandria
to begin their all-night vigil for registration the next morning. Its
a shame that students must wait so long to ensure a spot in their desired
class, but what a testiment to the passion and dedication they have for
the craft of classical painting and drawing! A true renaissance in the
heart of Old Towne! A "lottery" has been vetoed by many of the
students, so other solutions are still being mulled over by Rob and the
school. Thanks for your patience and sorry if you have been unable to
get in. We'll keep you posted!

Apparently
not one to waste time, Art League student
Jim Fradkin painted "Waiting for Liberace" while waiting
through the night to sign up for class. Great job, Jim!
ROB
TEACHING AT NELSON SHANK'S INCAMMINATI SCHOOL
Rob
has been a frequent guest teacher at the Incamminati school in Philadelphia.
He taught a five day workshop in February, and again in July. Most recently,
he conducted a five day anatomy workshop in November. The school's emphasis
is on classical realism - a true bright spot for classical art. For more
information go to www.studioincamminati.org.
IRELAND
TRIP A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR ALL
Students
enjoyed two full weeks in beautiful County Antrim, Norhern Ireland. Many
days were spent outdoors, painting and drawing places such as Dunluce
Castle, along the coast at Murlough Bay, Bona Margy Friary or downtown
Ballycastle. Students also painted portraits of some of the local folks.
Lina's parents joined us for the trip and were wined and dined by Rob's
many Irish relatives in the area.

APRIL
FLORENCE,
ITALY IN APRIL WITH ROB!
Art
League students say it is a real treat to tour the National Gallery
with Rob, who seems to be part walking encyclopedia when it comes
to all the old masters and their work. I've heard a number of amusing
stories about how his class groups inadvertantly pick up "strays"
- or other museum goers who, after listening in on his tours, decide
to join the group for the long haul, then end up slinking away in
embarassment when they find out that they are not following an "official"
museum guide after all!
Anyway..... Imagine spending a full week touring the great
art museums of Florence, such as the Academia, the Bargello,
and the Uffizzi, among others. Some drawing instruction
will also be incorporated into the program, but details are still
pending. The class is scheduled for the week of April 9th. For more
information, please contact
the Art League School directly at 703.683.2323 or go to
www.theartleague.org.
