I can't wait to take a class with Celia tomorrow at The Art League! Rob actually signed up but he is teaching during Celia's first day of the three-day workshop so I'll take his place. tomorrow. He teaches a three day workshop next weekend that is sort of the second part of her class, although they are both independent workshops. Here's a little detail of a drawing she's working on right now. Next weekend she teaches up on Boston.... then she's moving to London!!

TWO ART LEAGUE WORKSHOPS COMING IN MARCH

Rob and Celia will each teach three-day workshops at The Art League of Alexandria, Virginia in March. The classes can be taken separately or together. (Rob plans on taking Celia's class so this should be interesting!)

Both courses will explore techniques and principles that defined 19th-century art movements found in France, particularly among Beaux-Arts ateliers and Carolas-Duran’s atelier in Paris. While Part 1 is a figure drawing course, Part 2 is a figure painting course. Celia will draw from her own studies at L’École des Beaux-Arts, guiding participants through the timeless principles and techniques that emerged among atelier systems. The instruction will emphasize 19th-century French atelier traditions, such as classical draftsmanship, anatomy, and composition, while also incorporating her unique techniques for capturing the human body through graphite and chalk.

In the second part of this two-part series, Rob will lead a class inspired by the avant-garde teachings of Carolus-Duran's esteemed atelier in Paris. Participants will delve into the fundamental principles and techniques that defined this influential artistic movement including bold brushwork, expressive realism, and “premier coup” approach and use these ideas to help create figure and portrait painting.
