ON TEACHING…
Rob is internationally known for his inspiring and informative teaching style. He teaches at The Art League of Virginia and holds workshops throughout the U.S. and abroad. He regularly tours students through the great museums of Europe, garnering from his extensive knowledge of the old European masters and is a visiting instructor at The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, demonstrating old masters’ techniques. Rob is a distinguished faculty member and on the advisory board of The American Portrait Society. He was asked to pioneer one of their first online teaching courses for American Artist Magazine in 2009 and taught regularly at their “Weekend with the Masters” workshops. Liberace Studio has produced a series of tutorial dvds focusing on the figure, portrait and anatomy, and he teaches several online classes per year. He has been asked to contribute articles on technique for both American Artist and The Artist’s magazines. Rob has been named a “Modern Master” by the Art Renewal Center and has received the Grand Prize Awards for both the Art Renewal Center annual Salon Show and American Portrait Society’s annual portrait competition.

This year-long series explores the essential principles of portrait and figure drawing and painting, emphasizing structure, clarity, and craftsmanship. November 16-22 Florence: Masterworks & Urban Sketching with Robert Liberace
Join Robert Liberace in Florence, November 16–23, 2026, for the next in our series exploring the great art collections of Europe. Study masterworks at the Uffizi, Bargello, and special exhibitions including Artemisia Gentileschi, while drawing and urban sketching throughout Florence’s streets, piazzas, churches, and historic neighborhoods. The week will also include excursions to some of Tuscany’s great artistic destinations.

The Dynamic Sketch: Sargent’s Portrait Approach Art League School Alexandria Virginia
Inspired by the work of John Singer Sargent, this workshop examines the artist’s remarkable ability to capture character, form, and atmosphere with economy and confidence. Students work in charcoal and oil, studying Sargent’s training under Carolus-Duran and his “premier coup” painting method. Demonstrations focus on efficient drawing, decisive brushwork, and the ability to simplify complex forms without sacrificing accuracy or expression.

The Portrait Expressed Through Light and Color Warehouse 521 Nashville, Tennessee
This workshop will focus on portrait painting through changing light, atmosphere, and color. Each day will feature a different lighting arrangement and palette approach, studying how light itself can transform mood, structure, and expression in portrait painting.
Moving from the restrained drama of the tenebrist tradition to the vibrant color relationships of contemporary painting, the course will explore both classical and modern ideas while emphasizing strong design, structure, and painterly interpretation.
