Costume Drama-Features and Fabric Explored
From Vermeer’s “Girl with the Pearl Earring” to Sargent’s “Lady Macbeth” artists have used elaborately costumed subjects to accentuate the drama of their art. The class explores the beauty and complexity of this portrait tradition and features models dressed in period-inspired attire. The first day will involve drawing with a focus on the anatomy of both the face and fabric. Special attention will be given to the various characteristics of fabric folds. The final two days will explore painting the portrait and costume in oils and feature discussions on alla-prima paint handling and color.
