“Form and Function: The Foundations of Drawing and Painting the Portrait and Figure” via Zoom
October 30 to November 23 (four classes and four critique sessions)

This class explores the fundamental principles of drawing and painting both the portrait and figure with an emphasis on clarity and craftsmanship. Using basic materials from graphite to oil paint, participants will follow a systematic approach to understanding anatomy and structure through line and tone. Examples of great masterworks will be used to inspire and instruct while facilitating the clear and concise rendering of the figure and portrait. This solid foundation creates the framework for a more lively and expressive approach to art. The class will feature an analysis of classic and contemporary artworks followed by demonstrations applying the complex principles of form, anatomy, and style represented by each masterwork.

CLASSES

There will be eight sessions in total. All students can view all eight sessions. DRAWING/PAINTING SESSIONS These classes will be held on four consecutive Fridays (October 30, November 6, November 13, and November 20) from 2 pm To 5 pm US Eastern Standard Time (where all participants will have the opportunity to both observe and submit questions using the chat feature).
CRITIQUE SESSIONS The first three classes will be held on Wednesdays (November 4, November 11, November 18) and the final critique will be held on Monday, (November 23 ) from 2 pm to 5 pm US Eastern Standard Time. MODELS will appear primarily in the form of photo reference; however, there will be live in-studio models as well. The model reference images will be shown on screen (within Zoom’s rules) and participants will be directed to a website should they decide to purchase the same set for their own use.

CLASS RECORDINGS I realize it is difficult to attend each live class. In light of this, I will arrange a streaming feature on the class webpage which will give each student the opportunity to re-watch the class. Zoom’s recording is very poor quality so I will be recording the classes in HD with a separate device. The streaming option is a paid service so unfortunately, I cannot offer unlimited streams but I will offer a single free stream for each class that you can access any time of your choosing before December. You can watch it in addition to or instead of the live class. More information to come.
