January 16-February 4, 2026
The Portrait: Drawing, Grisaille, and Color

Since the Renaissance, artists from Van Eyck to Bouguereau have developed portrait methods built upon a clear sequence of stages moving from preparatory drawing to final painting. This special online workshop follows a single pose and the same model each week, guiding students through the full development of a portrait. Working step-by-step from drawing, to monochrome painting, to full color, participants will gain a deeper understanding of structure, gesture, modeling, and the luminous layering techniques that have shaped portraiture throughout history. Alongside traditional methods, Rob will introduce modern and contemporary interpretations of classical ideas, encouraging expressive mark-making, inventive color, and personal artistic voice. Special attention will be given to portrait hands, costume elements, and the unified flow of the entire figure.
The class will consist of six total sessions, following the same format as Rob’s previous online workshops:

The first part of the week will focus on drawing methods with an emphasis on form and light. The latter part will concentrate on the spirited technique of Alla Prima, (wet-into-wet application of paint) which will center on color and paint dynamics.
