Online Zoom Class
The Figure and Portrait in Red Chalk
Over the centuries artists like Michelangelo, Rubens, and Mancini have used red chalk to express the human figure with lyrical elegance and anatomical precision. Participants will explore the rich history and expressive potential of this timeless medium. This online workshop includes six sessions total – three studio classes and three critique sessions.
The first day will focus on combining the structured beauty of academic draftsmanship with the expressive qualities of the classical tradition. The second day will delve into mass-oriented figure drawing using the lush textures and tonal possibilities of red pastel chalks. The final day will explore portraiture, where Rob will demonstrate how red chalk can breathe warmth, sensitivity, and vitality into the human face.
Rob will work with both traditional materials—such as natural red earth, conte, pastel—and modern equivalents to show how historical practices can be integrated into a contemporary drawing routine.
CLASSES will be held on Fridays (June 13, 20, and 27) from 2pm to 5pm US Eastern Time. Participants may watch the class later (streamed for a limited time) in addition to (or instead of) attending live.
CRITIQUE SESSIONS will be held on Wednesdays (June 18, June 25, and July 2) from 2pm to 5pm US Eastern Time. The artwork of 20 students will be critiqued, although all participants may observe.
